Craft for a Cure

this September

Join us on 26th September 10am - 4pm to get creative and help us raise vital funds for Blood Cancer UK.

September is Blood Cancer Awareness Month and Blood Cancer UK are encouraging people across the country to get creative with their Craft for a Cure campaign.

There are more than 100 different types of blood cancer. More than 40,000 people are diagnosed every year in the UK, and blood cancer is the fifth most common cancer and the third biggest cancer killer in the UK.

On Saturday 26th September, we'll be opening the doors to our newly expanded Makers Millhouse and holding a very special CRAFT FOR A CURE DAY where 50% of EVERY Craft Cafe sale that day will be donated directly to Blood Cancer UK*.

Plus our new workshop room will also be filled with drop-in creative activities available for a donation, alongside some other special fundraising activities we're currently planning. (More details to come soon).

So you'll be able to come along, see our brand new bigger studio, spend the day getting creative and help us raise as much money as we possibly can for Blood Cancer UK at the same time.

*50% of every craft cafe sale will be donated to Blood Cancer UK. This includes all items on our craft cafe menu, however excludes sales from our shop, workshop bookings and tea room orders.

Why we're supporting Blood Cancer UK

In November 2013, (on Black Friday of all days), my husband Tim went for an eye test after noticing a new spot in his vision. Something the optician saw wasn't right and he was sent straight to hospital. A blood test later and, completely out of nowhere, at 29 years old, Tim was diagnosed with Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia (CML).

CML is a type of blood cancer and is much more commonly diagnosed later in life, with the average person being diagnosed at around 60 years old, so being diagnosed so young came as a huge shock.

But amongst all the fear that came with hearing the word leukaemia, we were also incredibly grateful to learn that research had completely changed what a CML diagnosis meant for Tim's future.

Had he been diagnosed just years earlier, a CML diagnosis would have been a fatal one. Whilst their still remains no cure, the development of targeted treatments called TKIs meant we were told that his cancer could be controlled and that he could expect to live a normal life.

Thirteen years on, he takes his tablets every day, has regular blood tests and monitoring and, thankfully his treatment to date has been successful and he is able to get on with his life.

And that's exactly why research matters, because it was someone who researched the treatment that changed Tim's future.

There are more than 100 different types of blood cancer. More than 40,000 people are diagnosed every year in the UK, and blood cancer is the fifth most common cancer and the third biggest cancer killer in the UK, and sadly, not every family currently gets to hear the reassuring words that we did.

How your donations help.

Could provide around ten people newly diagnosed with blood cancer, with one of Blood Cancer UK's health information booklets.

Could help Blood Cancer UK maintain their Forum for a day, helping people to connect with others and feel they are not alone

Could fund a Clinical Trials Support Nurse to help find a clinical trial for three people with blood cancer

Could fund a month's worth of experiments in the lab to allow researchers to understand more about how to treat a specific blood cancer.

How can you get involved?

Join us on Saturday 26th September 10am - 4pm at the studio to help us raise vital funds for Blood Cancer UK. 50% of your sales during your craft cafe booking will be donated, plus there will be a range of additional drop-in activities (booking not required) available for small donations.Â
